The bitterly cold winter months can be tough. Even stepping outside for a moment to take out the trash can be a chore. But humans aren’t the only ones this cold weather affects. Your vehicle’s fuel economy can also take a hit.

Not only does fuel efficiency decrease in winter, but your vehicle most likely won’t be as nimble as it normally is (especially on ice-covered roads.) The good news is there a variety of things you can do to maximize your vehicle’s fuel economy and get the best performance overall.

How can I improve fuel economy in the cold? 

• Keep your tires in great condition
  Tire condition plays a major role in fuel economy. It’s important to have tires with good tread and adequate air pressure. Properly inflated tires with good tread help the vehicle stay in contact with the surface of the road even on the slickest surfaces. 
•  Take longer trips
  In addition to having quality tires, it’s a good idea to combine trips in the car. Short trips (3-4 miles of less) in below-freezing weather can reduce your vehicle’s fuel efficiency significantly. By combining trips you are driving less often with a cold engine, which can help you get better fuel economy than if you take short trips. 
•  Stay up-to-date on automotive maintenance
  A well-maintained vehicle can operate more efficiently overall. Regular oil and filter changes, tire rotations and general maintenance translates into a vehicle that can operate at its best. Not only is a well-maintained vehicle more enjoyable to drive, it can mean better fuel economy.
